  • Producing Hassle-Hunters - Every Employee A Quality Specialist

A workplace hassle can be almost anything, but all hassles have things in common. First, hassles involve avoidable processes, procedures and actions that do not add value to an organization. Second, hassles aggravate everyone (except the person who insists the hassle continue). Hassles interfere with employees' abilities to do their jobs, they create problems for managers, and often they result in angry or frustrated clients.
  • Managers - Are You Getting The Information You Need To Do A Good Job?!

It's a very odd question...but an important one in government. One of the worst feelings a government manager, executive or supervisor can experience is that dreadful sinking feeling that occurs when it is discovered that something bad you should have known about wasn't conveyed to you in a timely and useful way. It could be a complaint from a member of the public that wasn't reported to you, but ended up in the Minister's office. It could be that a pet project of the person you work for is going badly, but nobody bothered to tell you, so you could give an accurate report or "heads-up" to your boss. Or, it could be some sort of personal problem on the part of a staff member that is affecting the work of your unit, unbeknownst to you.
  • Where TQM And Politics Clash

Last December, I had the opportunity to chat with a friend who works for a major Canadian consulting firm in the area of quality improvement, i asked him whether his company worked with public sector clients. He replied that while his company felt that this market would be lucrative, he also indicated that the government environment was difficult to manage. In particular, he mentioned two things: governments are too slow to make the commitment to quality improvement, and they are unwilling to embrace the concept that it takes an investment of time and money to improve a system as large as government. Doubtless, if he had more experience working with governments, he would have mentioned others.

  • Management File - What IS The Point Of Performance Appraisal - Reproduce this article free

Probably the most misused and abused and disused management tool in history is the performance appraisal. It's the strangest thing. Ask any manager or human resources person whether they think performance appraisal is an important thing to do, they are almost unanymous. "Of course it is", is the common response. If you ask why it's important, they will tell you and tell you and tell you.
