- One of the things that continues to surprise me is that when times are bad, organizations still spend money on employee engagement surveys. What are they expecting these surveys to tell them? You only need to walk around the office or factory and listen into some tea room discussions to find out that employees are not engaged because they are worried about their jobs

- The evidence is clear: engaged employees are more productive than their disengaged peers. In 2005, an oft-quoted Towers Perrin survey found that companies with high employee engagement had up to 19% higher operating margin, net profit margin, revenue growth and up to 25% greater earnings per share than companies with low employee engagement. More recently, Watson Wyatt, found that "The highly engaged are more than twice as likely to be top performers – almost 60% of them exceed or far exceed expectations for performance."

- The usual initiatives to engage employees are paternalistic. They merely scratch the surface because they leave the conventional heroic leadership model in place. The problem with heroic, transformational leadership is that the more heroic the leader, the more dependent employees can feel.
Much of what is called employee engagement is nothing more than old motivational factors that we have known about for at least 40 years in most cases.

- A Wyatt Watson survey in India found that the adoption of well known HR practices does not necessarily equate to higher employee satisfaction and engagement scores.
I could not discern specifically what “well known HR practices” the study is referring to, but I suspect it includes the current idea of managers handing over more of their managerial work to HR (orientation, job scoping, performance management, coaching, selection, training), leaving the managers with only their “technical” work to do. I think we have gone too far in this, and the tail is wagging the dog.
